CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES, XVII LEGISLATURE, 522th MEETING, 16 NOVEMBER 2015.
On 16 November 2015, during an urgent report to the Chamber of Deputies, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Paolo Gentiloni Silveri, made an urgent report on the terrorist attacks against the city of Paris in the night between 13 and 14 November 2015. On that occasion he described the role of Italy in the international coalition against ISIL/Daesh and stated:
In this context Italy plays its part, an important one within the anti-Daesh coalition: we have to state it proudly as we have hundreds of our soldiers engaged in such a task. We are, since the beginning, in the politico-military coalition fighting Daesh; we are part of the coordination group of 22 countries coordinating its activities; our Armed Forces have 280 units in Iraq, 200 of which train in Kurdistan those Peshmerga who, some days ago, liberated the city of Sinjar. We hereby recall the role of the Pershmerga and highlight with proud the fact that, at the moment, Italy is the leading nation in the military training of Kurdish forces, for I believe this to be very important in the context of what is happening in the area. Furthermore, our country plays a highly appreciated role in the training of the Iraqi police, involving around 100 Carabinieri trainers in Baghdad. We actually do much but, in light of what happened on Friday night in Paris, I think we should recognize that we have to do more and commit to each other to do more, as the situation in front of us deserves and requires that we do more as a country.
Then he addressed the situation in Syria as follows:
In Syria, we say two simple things: first of all, in order to dismiss Mr. Assad – the dictator, the responsible of the most dramatic humanitarian crisis of the last few years – without letting Daesh or Al Nusra filling the gap, we need a political transition; secondly, Russia can make a crucial contribution to this solution and to this political transition.
And he added:
A transition that puts Mr. Bashar al-Assad out of the picture, without leaving a gap filled by terrorists. This is thus the path we aim to follow in Syria, while military activity and fighting against Daesh and terrorism goes on.
